"Your Positivity Turns Me On"

My husband said something amazing to me this morning...and I didn’t realize quite how amazing it was until I let the words continue to sink in and really tune in to how they made me feel.

We had a particularly good morning for an “average Thursday.” We woke up at 5am like we have been the last 9 weeks to get our morning workout in, which unfortunately still doesn’t feel “easy”...but we do it anyway!

We have an amazing rooftop pool (and in Florida in April it’s already about 70* first thing in the morning) so Scott has been getting back into swimming for his morning workouts.

I was a competitive swimmer through part of Elementary School, Middle School, and into High School, but for some reason as an adult I tend to resist swimming for exercise, even though for someone who is “out of practice” I’m still pretty good at it.

Anyway, we both felt really accomplished after our swim! For us it’s a tough but very refreshing form of exercise. After our swim we went back to our apartment, I showered and Scott chilled on the couch while he waited for his turn. I checked the time after my shower and noticed we had about 5 minutes before Scott had to get in so I decided to snuggle up with him on the couch. It was so nice, peaceful, and quiet.

Then we proceeded to get ready for the day as we usually do, but much more chatty and upbeat than normal. Even despite a little bit of frustrating traffic on our commute (we commute to work together) we were just feeling “cheery”. We were kind of laughing and joking as Scott dropped me off at my office and I was getting out of the car he said:

“Your positive attitude turns me on.”

Which of course made me blush, giggle, and feel totally girlish, desirable, and sexy!

I smiled at him, told him to have a great day at work and realized as I continued to walk into my office and get situated I couldn’t get the smile off my face!! I am someone who likes to over-analyze a bit so I kept wondering to myself…”What exactly is it that is making me so giddy about that comment??” And after some reflection, I came up with a few things. :-)

  1. We have been together for nearly 12 years, and anyone in a serious, long-term relationship understands all the ups, downs, and changes (good & not so good) that can happen in that span of time. The fact that I can still randomly get his motor running feels awesome!
  2. It wasn’t something *physical*...it was my attitude that turned him on….my cheerfulness, playfulness, and “light” which is way more about me as a person than anything physical ever will be.
  3. In a world where misery loves company, it was so impactful (and almost shocking in a weird way) to experience how much deeper and stronger connection is when it’s based on joy. It’s so easy to build “connection” based off gripes and frustrations...and that negative kind of “commiseration” usually does feel kinda good in the moment! But today it really hit me how much more powerful it is to connect through shared joy.

We left each other feeling all giddy & happy and excited to see each other at the end of the day.

What a beautiful thing. <3

I’m definitely going to make it a point to “turn him on” more frequently with my positive attitude...sounds like it might be a great thing for both of us. :-)
