I HATE confrontation! Hate it!
And not just confrontation, but doing/saying ANYTHING that might upset someone, inconvenience them, make them think differently of me (in a negative way) etc. Anyone else feel me here?? BUT- I shouldn't let those feelings control me to the point I am in a situation I feel uncomfortable or unhappy...that just doesn't make sense. (Even though I have let that happen more times than I could ever count! Recently I was SO STRESSED about telling someone I respect and admire about not wanting to be a part of their small accountability group. I was ASKED to be a part of the group! It was/is an honor to have been asked!! But the group started causing me more stress and anxiety than helping me. I knew that, but was telling myself to 'suck it up.' I was SO stressed about it in fact, that I even talked to my therapist about the subject for about 20-30 min! (Yes- I see a therapist weekly and it is AWESOME! If you are reading this and in therapy- KUDOS TO YOU for doing arguably the HEALTHIEST thing you can do for yourself! She made me realize that my feelings were TOTALLY valid, that I am not a 'wimp' (like I was telling myself), and that if something is on my mind that much and causing that much stress that I need to know when to step back, step down, or set a boundary. . And she was SO RIGHT. . I did what was right for me, and as kindly as I could I removed myself from the group. I could instantly feel the stress lift and I was actually proud of myself for being true to me. People may not always understand your reasons for doing something, but the thing is, that's OKAY. And honestly how someone else feels about your choices shouldn't affect whether or not you make them. YOU KNOW WHAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU Allow yourself to be pushed a little, we need to get uncomfortable to be able to grow, but also know that if something is causing consistent stress/anxiety it might be time to make a change. Share with a friend you love who needs to hear this message of strength! |
